Korea's paper-craft is an ancient art born out of frugality and ingenuity, with origins almost as old as the process
of paper making itself. The Chinese first invented paper during the 2nd century, and kept the techniques a closely
guarded secret. It wasn't until around 600 AD that this technology traveled to Korea, and paper became a valued
and costly commodity. In order to preserve and this treasured material, the ancient Koreans developed various methods
of recycling used pieces and scraps into functional objects and artifacts. To this day, paper-craft remains one of the most renowned art forms in Korea.
Korea's paper-craft is made up of a variety of methods that can bring about some truly astounding results. Traditional mulberry paper called
Hanji - which is impressively strong - can be torn into strips and twisted into cord for weaving baskets, shredded and made into a sticky
pulp for shaping into bowls, or pasted in layers to create trunks as strong as wood. In ancient times, paper was even fashioned into battle
armor which was said to have protected soldiers from arrows, spears and other weapons.
This versatile art form is still highly celebrated by today's Korean artisans. By taking age-old techniques into new directions, they create
