A "betel nut" refers to the nut of the areca palm, which gives a mild narcotic effect when chewed. This plant is native to India, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and parts of Africa. The betel nuts are chewed, usually wrapped in betel leaves, along with some lime and other spices for flavoring. Betel chewing originated in Southeast Asia, and today it is practiced from East Africa to the Pacific Islands.

Indonesians had few cupboards available in their village homes, instead baskets and boxes were created for storage of items. Spice boxes were made to hold the betel chew, and had small compartments for each ingredient needed. Most cultures have some form of betel box to keep the tools and ingredients for preparing a betel chew. These boxes come in all shapes and sizes and decorations range from plain lacquered bamboo to very detailed painted lacquer boxes and intricately carved silver boxes. The decoration style all depends on the country, culture and wealth of the owner. In Indonesia, the Lombok artisans hand carves betel boxes from wood. These skilled carvers can hold a block of wood with their feet and rough out a recognizable shape with a chisel and mallet in half an hour. These beautiful boxes are hand crafted from local wood representing the art and culture from past generations.
