Flying Serpent Pitcher
In the Costa Rican town of Guatil, the tradition of making hand-thrown pottery has been passed down from generation to generation for over 800 years. Descendant from the Chorotega Indians, the community of about 250 people is almost entirely supported by the works of artisans who are well known for their pottery-making. Our Flying Serpent Pitcher is handcrafted in this same tradition by local artist Willy Villafuerte. Taught the craft by his mother, he transforms locally gathered hard clay into wonderful ceramic artwork. This round pitcher features the "feathered" or "flying serpent" motif - a symbol long adored for its legendary significance in Mesoamerican folklore. Each piece is hand-signed by the artist.
